Condena mundial casi unánime en la ONU al embargo de EEUU contra Cuba
NUEVA YORK (AFP) — La Asamblea General de la ONU pidió este miércoles a Estados Unidos por casi unanimidad poner fin al embargo comercial y financiero aplicado contra Cuba desde hace 46 años.Una resolución sobre la "necesidad de poner fin al bloqueo económico, comercial y financiero impuesto por Estados Unidos contra Cuba" recibió 185 votos a favor, 3 en contra (Estados Unidos, Israel y Palau) y dos abstenciones (Micronesia e Islas Marshall). El apoyo a Cuba fue este año incluso mayor al del año pasado, cuando una resolución similar había recibido el respaldo de 184 países. En 20074 países habían votado en contra y Micronesia se abstuvo.Se trata de la 17ª consecutiva vez que la ONU vota un texto similar. De los 59 países que apoyaron el texto en 1992, la cifra ha ido aumentando a 179 en 2004, 183 en 2006 y 184 el año pasado.El canciller cubano Felipe Pérez Roque dijo ante la Asamblea general que "cálculos muy conservadores revelan que el daño directo acumulado que ha provocado el bloqueo a Cuba supera los 93 mil millones de dólares, casi dos veces nuestro Producto Interno Bruto"."No es difícil imaginar lo que Cuba habría alcanzado si durante estos casi 50 años no hubiese estado sometida a esta brutal guerra económica a escala planetaria", dijo.En clara exhortación a un cambio de política exterior norteamericana en caso de victoria del candidato demócrata a la Casa Blanca, Pérez Roque dijo que "el bloqueo es más viejo que el señor Barack Obama y que toda mi generación"."Dentro de unas horas será elegido un nuevo presidente de los Estados Unidos, dijo Pérez Roque. "Éste deberá decidir si admite que el bloqueo es una política fracasada, que cada vez le provoca un mayor aislamiento y descrédito a su país o si persiste, con obcecación y crueldad, en intentar rendir al pueblo cubano por hambre y enfermedades".Las sanciones económicas estadounidenses a Cuba datan de 1962, decididas por el presidente John Fitzerald Kennedy, también demócrata.Fue la primera de una serie de medidas de carácter económico y comercial para aislar al régimen de Fidel Castro, a las que siguieron, entre otras, la ley Helms-Burton, la ley Torricelli y las restricciones a los viajes a la isla.Pérez Roque insistió en el creciente aislamiento de Estados Unidos. "Es cierto que Estados Unidos necesita un cambio --dijo, en nueva referencia velada al eslogan de campaña de Obama-- y el mundo también".El representante norteamericano Robert Godard defendió ante la Asamblea el derecho de su país a decidir la forma de comerciar con Cuba y aseguró que el embargo permite "alejar los recursos de los dirigentes" cubanos.Godard aseguró que el pueblo norteamericano aporta cientos de millones de dólares de asistencia humanitaria a Cuba y que La Habana había rechazado ayuda ofrecida en respuesta a los recientes huracanes que azotaron a la isla.Otros países tomaron la palabra para rechazar el embargo, incluyendo México, Vietnam, Sudáfrica, Irán, Rusia y, en nombre de la Unión Europea, Francia.El representante francés Jean-Pierre Lacroix dijo que "durante los últimos meses, la situación de los derechos humanos en ese país tuvo algunos desarrollos positivos".Sin embargo, agregó Lacroix, "la situación fundamentalmente no ha cambiado, a pesar de una disminución del número de presos políticos y de los actos de hostigamiento."El gobierno cubano sigue negando a sus ciudadanos los derechos y libertades cívicas, políticas y económicas reconocidas en el plano internacional", dijo.El representante de México Claude Heller recordó por su parte que "diversos órganos y entidades del sistema de las Naciones Unidas consignan el impacto negativo que tiene el bloqueo para el desarrollo económico y social de Cuba".La resolución aprobada "insta una vez más a los Estados en los que existen y continúan aplicándose leyes y medidas de ese tipo a que, en el plazo más breve posible y de acuerdo con su ordenamiento jurídico, tomen las medidas necesarias para derogarlas o dejarlas sin efecto".

First Venezuelan Telecommunications Satellite Launched from China
Havana, Cuba, Oct 29 (acn) The first Venezuelan telecommunications satellite was launched today from the Chinese city of Cichuan. The satellite, named after Latin American independence Hero Simon Bolivar, was built by China at a cost of 406 million dollars and it is expected to bring important benefits to the social, cultural and education development of Venezuela.Also known as VENESAT-1, the satellite has a 15-year lifetime and was built by China´s Space Technology Academy, which also trained Venezuelan professionals in the field.Once put into its final orbit at 36, 500 kilometers and with its solar panels deployed, the Simon Bolivar satellite will begin a certification testing period that takes between one and two months.

For the 17th time the United Nations General Assembly will vote on Wednesday, October 29, on a resolution presented by Cuba that calls for an end to the nearly half century US blockade against the Caribbean nation.
The resolution, which is entitled ‘Necessity to End the Economic, Trade and Financial Blockade Imposed by the United States against Cuba’ and circulating at the General Assembly since last week, is scheduled to be voted on during a plenary session of the international body.Last year, 184 nations supported the resolution, four opposed and one abstained.On Thursday, the General Assembly will sponsor an interactive panel on the international financial crisis to find solutions to the complicated and dangerous situation.The UN Security Council will review reports from the UN mission in Côte d’Ivoire and from the International Court of Justice. (acn) In a world, which is currently facing a financial, food, environment and climate crisis that worsens each passing day, a secure and stable employment for young people in particular has turned into a problem for those who attempt to address that need. Aside from the serious financial problems in the United States and other economic powers in the world, with their inauspicious impact on the rest of nations, the issue of the working force in the capitalist system constitutes by itself a typical characteristic of its production system.The conception stating that a broad segment of unemployment is necessary to maintain afloat efficiency and productivity, two elements that generate major earnings for capitalism and the exploitation of the workers, only hides social problems and gives way to increasing poverty. The most affected sector is the youth with risks that implies mortgaging the future of a society. Cuba escapes such cases.
HUMANITY ABOVE ALL
Since its own genesis, the Cuban Revolution established as a goal the reduction of 1 million 350 thousand jobless people. The case is that Cuba achieved the so much desired employment in 2004, reporting an unemployment rate of 2.3 percent, according to international standards for this indicator.In addition to the efforts aimed at developing the country and boosting the creation of jobs and the decision of undertaking the socialist path, it was necessary to counter apparently insuperable obstacles. In the early 1990´s, after Cuba lost its main trading partners, which translated into the fall of almost 35 percent of its Gross Domestic Product—add due to the tightening of Washington’s economic blockade by the approval of extraterritorial laws-- the economy registered a deterioration with an unemployment rate reaching 8,3 percent in 1995.However, this did not mean the loss of services and basic social rights for the population, among them, health and dental assistance in addition to free and universal education, based on the principle that human beings are a priority.During the second half of the 1990´s, a progressive economic recovery along with the local employment policy was oriented to reducing unemployment. The indicator was lowered to 1,8 percent in 2007, the lowest in Latin America and the Caribbean.At the end of 2007, the active population in Cuba, according to the National Statistics Office, rose to 4 million 956 thousand, of which a little over 1 million were young people between 15 and 29 years of age, representing 20.5 percent of the universe of workers. More than 200 new social programs emerged, many of them consecrated to the new concept of study as employment, among them, those targeting young people that had had dropped out from schools.This option benefited some 400 thousand people, of which 80 thousand today are studying in the university. Other programs that means a new revolution in education, health and culture, allowed the formation and employment of thousands of young people in social and human services.Meanwhile, the development of urban agriculture in 1996 generated some 326 thousand jobs. Since the second half of the 1990´s over 1 million 300 thousand new jobs were created, most of them for the youth.
CUBA IN THE LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN REALITY
The Cuban nation guarantees work to each graduate of higher education and technical professional education, in addition to those that finish their general military service; the physically challenged are able to work as well as citizens who meet prison sentences. Cuban reality is quite different from the experience of other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, where some 10 million young people are unemployed, equivalent to 16 percent of the labor force between 15 and 24 years of age, according to the International Labor Organization (ILO). In addition, the ILO adds that some 30 million young people are employed in the informal economy, where bad working conditions prevail and another 22 millions do not study or work. However, in relation with employment the problems in Cuba lie in that the available jobs are not occupied. Recently, the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Alfredo Morales pointed out that in the country, there are still 210 thousand people who, for different reasons, are not working although there are vacancies. Morales said that there is a deficit of some 130 thousand people in strategic sectors like food production, social and education programs and services. In the early 1990´s, after Cuba lost its main trading partners, which translated into the fall of almost 35 percent of its Gross Domestic Product—add due to the tightening of Washington’s economic blockade by the approval of extraterritorial laws-- the economy registered a deterioration with an unemployment rate reaching 8,3 percent in 1995.However, this did not mean the loss of services and basic social rights for the population, among them, health and dental assistance in addition to free and universal education, based on the principle that human beings are a priority.During the second half of the 1990´s, a progressive economic recovery along with the local employment policy was oriented to reducing unemployment. The indicator was lowered to 1,8 percent in 2007, the lowest in Latin America and the Caribbean.At the end of 2007, the active population in Cuba, according to the National Statistics Office, rose to 4 million 956 thousand, of which a little over 1 million were young people between 15 and 29 years of age, representing 20.5 percent of the universe of workers. More than 200 new social programs emerged, many of them consecrated to the new concept of study as employment, among them, those targeting young people that had had dropped out from schools.This option benefited some 400 thousand people, of which 80 thousand today are studying in the university. Other programs that means a new revolution in education, health and culture, allowed the formation and employment of thousands of young people in social and human services.Meanwhile, the development of urban agriculture in 1996 generated some 326 thousand jobs. Since the second half of the 1990´s over 1 million 300 thousand new jobs were created, most of them for the youth.
CUBA IN THE LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN REALITY
The Cuban nation guarantees work to each graduate of higher education and technical professional education, in addition to those that finish their general military service; the physically challenged are able to work as well as citizens who meet prison sentences. Cuban reality is quite different from the experience of other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, where some 10 million young people are unemployed, equivalent to 16 percent of the labor force between 15 and 24 years of age, according to the International Labor Organization (ILO). In addition, the ILO adds that some 30 million young people are employed in the informal economy, where bad working conditions prevail and another 22 millions do not study or work. However, in relation with employment the problems in Cuba lie in that the available jobs are not occupied. Recently, the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Alfredo Morales pointed out that in the country, there are still 210 thousand people who, for different reasons, are not working although there are vacancies. Morales said that there is a deficit of some 130 thousand people in strategic sectors like food production, social and education programs and services. Watch the United Nations next week.On Wednesday, October 29, the UN General Assembly will vote for the seventeenth consecutive year on a resolution condemning the United States' embargo on Cuba. Last year, the resolution was adopted by a vote of 184-4. The outcome, this year, is not really in doubt. The question, as before, is whether anyone in our government - now, or in the next administration - is listening.Our nation has tried for fifty years to replace Cuba's government with one more to our liking. Diplomatic and economic sanctions have been the principal instrument of this policy. Ten American presidents, starting with Eisenhower, have pursued this goal. President Bush will leave office having tried and failed to achieve regime change. The next president will inherit a failed and futile policy that hurts Cubans and sullies our nation's image around the world.The UN debate takes place against the backdrop of Cuba recovering from four hurricanes and tropical storms that caused $5 billion and more in devastation. Our discredited sanctions policy is now being used to block the sale of construction materials to repair Cuba's housing stock, and to block Cuban-American families from helping their relatives on the island with the process of recovery. Only a few US hard-headed policy makers are hard-hearted enough to view a policy like this with satisfaction. More and more of us view it as a national disgrace. A strong majority of Americans want our Cuba policy to change.The vote in the General Assembly also comes six days before our election. In years past, Americans have held the UN in low regard and paid it little heed. This year could be different. Our policy toward Cuba leaves the United States increasingly isolated at a moment in our history when we can ill afford to go it alone. Were the United States to replace our policy of sanctions with one of engagement, we would have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

La Habana, 24 oct (AIN) Esteban Lazo Hernández, Vicepresidente del Consejo de Estado, recibió en el Palacio de la Revolución, en horas de la tarde de este viernes, al excelentísimo señor Louis Michel, Comisario Europeo para el Desarrollo y la Ayuda Humanitaria. Participaron también en el encuentro el Canciller cubano, Felipe Pérez Roque, y Joseph Borrel, Presidente de la Comisión de Desarrollo del Parlamento Europeo, junto a otros funcionarios cubanos y de la Comisión Europea. Ambas partes coincidieron en lo positivo de haberse reanudado la cooperación bilateral entre la Comisión Europea y Cuba, uno de los principales objetivos del viaje de Michel a nuestro país. Dicha cooperación tiene como bases el tratamiento recíproco y no discriminatorio de las partes y el estricto respeto a su independencia política, la conveniencia mutua y en función de las prioridades establecidas por el país receptor, tal como expresa la declaración firmada el pasado jueves por el Canciller cubano y el Comisionado europeo.

La Habana, 24 oct (AIN) Las repúblicas de Cuba y del Congo ampliaron su cooperación bilateral hoy, con la firma, en esta capital, de un protocolo para la lucha contra la malaria en ese país africano. El convenio, entre el Ministerio de Salud del Congo y el laboratorio cubano de producciones biofarmacéuticas LABIOFAM, comprende también la ejecución de otros proyectos en favor de la erradicación de enfermedades transmitidas por vectores. En los acuerdos, alcanzados en la XIII Sesión de la Comisión Mixta Intergubernamental entre ambos Estados, se hizo patente la voluntad de ampliar la asistencia médica, educacional y deportiva que la Isla mantiene, con el envío de profesionales y técnicos, a la nación del llamado Continente Negro. Las bibliotecas nacionales del Congo y José Martí, en La Habana, establecieron también los primeros pasos a fin de estimular el intercambio entre esas entidades homólogas. Charles Zacharie Bowao, ministro de la Presidencia encargado de la Cooperación, Acción Humanitaria y la Solidaridad, agradeció la asistencia mantenida por la Isla durante más de cuatro décadas y resaltó el beneficio brindado a su pueblo por los internacionalistas cubanos. El país caribeño ha graduado en diferentes especialidades a dos mil 725 jóvenes del Congo, de ellos mil 752 de nivel superior, mientras 456 cooperantes cubanos han prestado servicios solidarios a esa nación africana.

- HAVANA (AFP) — Cuba and the European Union formally restored ties Thursday, signing a cooperation agreement that put an end to five years of chilly relations, officials said.The agreement was signed in Havana by Cuban Foreign Minster Felipe Perez Roque and EU Development Commissioner Louis Michel.The agreement also approves an emergency humanitarian aid package of two million euros (2.5 million dollars), available immediately for reconstruction efforts for damage caused by hurricanes Gustav and Ike in September.A further 25 million to 30 million euros (32 million to 38.5 million dollars) will be made available starting in 2009, officials said.The agreement followed an EU decision in June to lift sanctions imposed against Havana in 2003 for the imprisonment of more than 70 dissidents, and for the execution of three men convicted of hijacking a passenger ferry and demanding it be taken to the United States."I think the elements that unite Cuba and the European Union are more numerous than those that divide us," said Michel, adding that the partnership "will have positive results for both parties."Michel also announced the possibility of joint Cuba-EU cooperation on a variety of issues, including environmental protection, health, education and agriculture.Roque said the agreement "opens a new phase (between the parties) that moves beyond past conflicts."The decision, Roque said, is "consistent with the interests of the people of the European Union and Cuba."The EU decision to restore ties represents a setback for the United States, which failed to convince eastern European allies in the 27-nation bloc to try to block the move.EU officials have said they will review the human rights situation in Cuba every year.Normalization of European ties with Havana was championed by Spain, which restored its relations with Cuba in 2007.Cuban dissidents have also criticized the European Union's move, arguing that human rights in Cuba have not improved.

(acn) US rhetoric with regard to violations of agreements adopted by the World Trade Organization (WTO) was condemned by Cuba, another eight nations and the bloc of 27 making up the European Union (EU). In this regard, the Prensa Latina news agency reports that there was a repetition of the same issue of Section 211 of the 1998 Law of Budgetary Allocations, which has facilitated the misappropriation of the famous Cuban Havana Club rum brand by the Bacardi Company in the US market. Before the WTO’s Organ for the Settlement of Differences (OSD), the counselor of Cuba’s Mission to the international organizations in Geneva, Jorge Ferrer, denounced that the document presented by Washington was a mockery. Ferrer expressed that the document had no sense and stressed that month after month, for more than six years, the representatives of the White House had repeated exactly the same words, without the least of intentions of approaching the truth. He claimed that Section 211 is still in force and that the legislative projects aimed at abolishing it have not prospered. The Cuban official recalled that intellectual property rights are private, the main beneficiaries of which are companies from the United States and other developed countries, for being the owners of the overwhelming majority of brands and patents. The assertion of the US media -amid the financial crisis- that the protection of intellectual property rights is key, was characterized as pure rhetoric by the Cuban diplomat . European Community delegations -representing the 27 members of the EU- and representatives from India, Brazil, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Nicaragua, Bolivia and Venezuela, also criticized Washington’s practices.

- HAVANA (AFP) — Cuba and the European Union formally restored ties Thursday, signing a cooperation agreement that put an end to five years of chilly relations, officials said.The agreement was signed in Havana by Cuban Foreign Minster Felipe Perez Roque and EU Development Commissioner Louis Michel.The agreement also approves an emergency humanitarian aid package of two million euros (2.5 million dollars), available immediately for reconstruction efforts for damage caused by hurricanes Gustav and Ike in September.A further 25 million to 30 million euros (32 million to 38.5 million dollars) will be made available starting in 2009, officials said.The agreement followed an EU decision in June to lift sanctions imposed against Havana in 2003 for the imprisonment of more than 70 dissidents, and for the execution of three men convicted of hijacking a passenger ferry and demanding it be taken to the United States."I think the elements that unite Cuba and the European Union are more numerous than those that divide us," said Michel, adding that the partnership "will have positive results for both parties."Michel also announced the possibility of joint Cuba-EU cooperation on a variety of issues, including environmental protection, health, education and agriculture.Roque said the agreement "opens a new phase (between the parties) that moves beyond past conflicts."The decision, Roque said, is "consistent with the interests of the people of the European Union and Cuba."The EU decision to restore ties represents a setback for the United States, which failed to convince eastern European allies in the 27-nation bloc to try to block the move.EU officials have said they will review the human rights situation in Cuba every year.Normalization of European ties with Havana was championed by Spain, which restored its relations with Cuba in 2007.Cuban dissidents have also criticized the European Union's move, arguing that human rights in Cuba have not improved.

In this regard, the Prensa Latina news agency reports that there was a repetition of the same issue of Section 211 of the 1998 Law of Budgetary Allocations, which has facilitated the misappropriation of the famous Cuban Havana Club rum brand by the Bacardi Company in the US market. Before the WTO’s Organ for the Settlement of Differences (OSD), the counselor of Cuba’s Mission to the international organizations in Geneva, Jorge Ferrer, denounced that the document presented by Washington was a mockery. Ferrer expressed that the document had no sense and stressed that month after month, for more than six years, the representatives of the White House had repeated exactly the same words, without the least of intentions of approaching the truth. He claimed that Section 211 is still in force and that the legislative projects aimed at abolishing it have not prospered. The Cuban official recalled that intellectual property rights are private, the main beneficiaries of which are companies from the United States and other developed countries, for being the owners of the overwhelming majority of brands and patents. The assertion of the US media -amid the financial crisis- that the protection of intellectual property rights is key, was characterized as pure rhetoric by the Cuban diplomat . European Community delegations -representing the 27 members of the EU- and representatives from India, Brazil, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Nicaragua, Bolivia and Venezuela, also criticized Washington’s practices.

In a few years, the two oldest national academies of science in the world outside of Europe--those of the United States and Cuba--will celebrate their 150th anniversaries. Yet despite the proximity of both nations and many common scientific interests, the U.S. embargo on exchanges with Cuba, which began in 1961 and is now based on the 1996 U.S. Helms-Burton Act and subsequent regulations, has largely blocked scientific exchange. It's time to establish a new scientific relationship, not only to address shared challenges in health, climate, agriculture, and energy, but also to start building a framework for expanded cooperation.

Cuba avanza hacia una profunda'' reforma salarial que permitirá a la gente ganar por lo que hace, aunque aún se trabaja en ella porque hacerla en este momento provocaría inflación y el debilitamiento de la moneda local, dijo el martes el canciller cubano Felipe Pérez Roque.Reunido con empresarios mexicanos en su último día de visita oficial al país, el jefe de la diplomacia cubana les aseguró que junto a la reforma salarial, su país se encamina a tener una moneda única con una tasa real.Vamos a una reforma de salarios que permita que la gente gane por lo que hace y que resuelva esa contradicción en Cuba... en la cual el maletero de un hotel o el empleado de un restaurante, con la propina que recibe gana más que un cirujano'', dijo Pérez Roque ante miembros del Consejo Mexicano de Comercio Exterior.Tenemos que ir a una profunda reforma salarial, nos encaminamos a eso'', añadió.Entrevistado al término de la reunión, el canciller aclaró que Cuba ha iniciado un reordenamiento económico por etapas, por lo que no podía decir cuándo se podría concretar las modificaciones en materia de salarios.Tiene que ser por fases y tiene que tener un sustento, porque si se lanza dinero en salarios a la calle sin respaldo, va a ser inflacionario, va a debilitar nuestra moneda y no va a resolver las cosas'', refirió.Actualmente casi todos los cubanos trabajan para el gobierno y ganan un salario mensual promedio de 408 pesos cubanos (unos 19,5 dólares), a lo que sin embargo debe sumarse una serie de subsidios y gratuidades en alimentos y servicios.En la isla también existe una doble circulación monetaria: peso convertible o CUC (equivalente a unos 1,08 dólares) y el peso cubano (cuyo tipo de cambio frente al dólar es de poco más de 20 a 1) Pérez Roque dijo que Cuba está en camino de ordenar diversas situaciones y una muestra es la revaluación de su moneda y un control del déficit fiscal.Refirió que después de que el peso cubano cayó a 150 por dólar en la década de 1990, actualmente se cotiza entre 24 y 25 por divisa estadounidense.Así que la moneda se ha revaluado (y) el déficit que llegamos a tener de 33% del producto interno bruto, de déficit fiscal, en este momento es de 3%'', afirmó.

Cuba avanza hacia una profunda'' reforma salarial que permitirá a la gente ganar por lo que hace, aunque aún se trabaja en ella porque hacerla en este momento provocaría inflación y el debilitamiento de la moneda local, dijo el martes el canciller cubano Felipe Pérez Roque.Reunido con empresarios mexicanos en su último día de visita oficial al país, el jefe de la diplomacia cubana les aseguró que junto a la reforma salarial, su país se encamina a tener una moneda única con una tasa real.Vamos a una reforma de salarios que permita que la gente gane por lo que hace y que resuelva esa contradicción en Cuba... en la cual el maletero de un hotel o el empleado de un restaurante, con la propina que recibe gana más que un cirujano'', dijo Pérez Roque ante miembros del Consejo Mexicano de Comercio Exterior.Tenemos que ir a una profunda reforma salarial, nos encaminamos a eso'', añadió.Entrevistado al término de la reunión, el canciller aclaró que Cuba ha iniciado un reordenamiento económico por etapas, por lo que no podía decir cuándo se podría concretar las modificaciones en materia de salarios.Tiene que ser por fases y tiene que tener un sustento, porque si se lanza dinero en salarios a la calle sin respaldo, va a ser inflacionario, va a debilitar nuestra moneda y no va a resolver las cosas'', refirió.Actualmente casi todos los cubanos trabajan para el gobierno y ganan un salario mensual promedio de 408 pesos cubanos (unos 19,5 dólares), a lo que sin embargo debe sumarse una serie de subsidios y gratuidades en alimentos y servicios.En la isla también existe una doble circulación monetaria: peso convertible o CUC (equivalente a unos 1,08 dólares) y el peso cubano (cuyo tipo de cambio frente al dólar es de poco más de 20 a 1) Pérez Roque dijo que Cuba está en camino de ordenar diversas situaciones y una muestra es la revaluación de su moneda y un control del déficit fiscal.Refirió que después de que el peso cubano cayó a 150 por dólar en la década de 1990, actualmente se cotiza entre 24 y 25 por divisa estadounidense.Así que la moneda se ha revaluado (y) el déficit que llegamos a tener de 33% del producto interno bruto, de déficit fiscal, en este momento es de 3%'', afirmó.

More than 1.4 million members of the José Martí Pioneers Organization will be involved in the electoral process hold to choose student leaders at the classroom and school levelBy: Margarita BarrioToday will be a special day in each primary and secondary school in Cuba because students are called on to choose the best and more capable among them. Those students selected will represent the rest within the José Martí Pioneers Organization (OPJM) at school and classroom level.More than 1,400,000 members of the OPJM will be involved on the Pioneer elections. Students from the fourth to the sixth grade will hold public and direct elections, while those in secondary schools will select their leaders secretly and directly.Students from first to third grade will be assigned some activities in their classrooms; and those from third grade will also be observers to the electoral process as part of their preparation for holding pioneer elections next academic year.After the elections are concluded, students will hold artistic galas to celebrate the Day of Cuban Culture.In primary schools, 140,000 students of fourth grade will also enter the Pioneer Scout Movement, while 130,000 students of firth grade will become children scouts.

Cuba says it is sitting on more than 20 billion barrels of offshore oil in the Gulf of Mexico. That’s more than double what the U.S. figures Cuba has, and would represent more oil than the U.S. has in reserve, according to the BBC. If true—and if the reserves can be recovered—that would turn Cuba from a big oil importer into one of the world’s 20 biggest exporters. It wouldn’t much help presidential candidates’ plans to reduce U.S. dependence on Mid-East oil, though. Due to the existing embargo, U.S. firms will be shut out of any Cuban oil exploration projects, and any future exports. In the meantime, Spain’s Repsol and Brazil’s Petrobras are leading the charge to tap the deep-water finds.Cuba’s state oil company says it came up with the number by extrapolating from U.S. surveys of existing Gulf of Mexico fields, and adding Cuba’s insider knowledge of its own waters. More than 1.4 million members of the José Martí Pioneers Organization will be involved in the electoral process hold to choose student leaders at the classroom and school levelBy: Margarita BarrioToday will be a special day in each primary and secondary school in Cuba because students are called on to choose the best and more capable among them. Those students selected will represent the rest within the José Martí Pioneers Organization (OPJM) at school and classroom level.More than 1,400,000 members of the OPJM will be involved on the Pioneer elections. Students from the fourth to the sixth grade will hold public and direct elections, while those in secondary schools will select their leaders secretly and directly.Students from first to third grade will be assigned some activities in their classrooms; and those from third grade will also be observers to the electoral process as part of their preparation for holding pioneer elections next academic year.After the elections are concluded, students will hold artistic galas to celebrate the Day of Cuban Culture.In primary schools, 140,000 students of fourth grade will also enter the Pioneer Scout Movement, while 130,000 students of firth grade will become children scouts.

Cuba Libre: Cuba Says It Has More Oil Than the U.S.

Cuba says it is sitting on more than 20 billion barrels of offshore oil in the Gulf of Mexico. That’s more than double what the U.S. figures Cuba has, and would represent more oil than the U.S. has in reserve, according to the BBC. If true—and if the reserves can be recovered—that would turn Cuba from a big oil importer into one of the world’s 20 biggest exporters. It wouldn’t much help presidential candidates’ plans to reduce U.S. dependence on Mid-East oil, though. Due to the existing embargo, U.S. firms will be shut out of any Cuban oil exploration projects, and any future exports. In the meantime, Spain’s Repsol and Brazil’s Petrobras are leading the charge to tap the deep-water finds.Cuba’s state oil company says it came up with the number by extrapolating from U.S. surveys of existing Gulf of Mexico fields, and adding Cuba’s insider knowledge of its own waters.
