Ricardo Alarcon Calls for Action to Avoid Closing of Cuban Five Case
HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 16 (acn) Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcon stressed the need to prevent the closing by the US Supreme Court of the case of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters held in US jails.“We will avoid the closing of the case with arguments, rallies, concerts and the mobilization of the people of Cuba and the United States and of many other places of the world,” said Alarcon during the TVshow La Mesa Redonda, which analyzed the course of the appeal process of the case. In a phone call from Argentina, Mirta Rodriguez, mother of Antonio Guerrero, who is one of the five Cubans incarcerated in the United States, reiterated the unyielding will to keep ahead with the struggle of her son, who turned 50 years on Thursday. The president of the Cuban Parliament explained about the arbitrary actions committed against the five antiterrorist fighters since they were arrested and later tried without proofs. Alarcon insisted in the need to increase mobilizations around the world in favor of the release of Antonio Guerrero, Rene Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino. Those actions are very significant for the people of the United States, who do not know the truth of the case, due to the distortion or silence on the case by the US media, he said.

Food Offer Increase in Central Cuba Counters Food Shortage
HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 16 (acn) The population in Central Cienfuegos province welcomed an increase in the offer of meat, including goat, lamb and pork, at state and farmer markets amidst the shortage of produce caused by the strong impact on the island food sector by recent storms.Cienfuegos citizens in the different municipalities and the main city have access to a steady supply of those commodities provided by the local EGAME Livestock Enterprise, which also supplies cheese and smoked meats of several kinds during the week.Enterprise director Julio Jovas told the Cuban News Agency that out of the total livestock production in the eight municipalities, 30 percent of lamb and 39 percent of goat are funnelled to local markets, as well as to maternity homes and senior citizen clubs. Those figures may increase once cold house capacity improves in the province, said the official.The population also has he option of purchasing live animals to be raised in home backyards. The total scheduled livestock output for the year (496 tons) was reached in October, but the figure could grow up to 800 tons by the end of the year. In supporting the local effort, the government has assigned the enterprise certain amounts of animal feed as well as pasture lands. Though Cienfuegos is the smallest province in Cuba, it has over 500 rabbit-raisers, as well as 160 goat and lamb producers; livestock developers here expect to raise some 100, 000 animals, which translates into 4,5 percent of the total figure of those species in the country.
