U.S. government presents itsopposition to the Supreme Court reviewing the Five’s case
Alina Martínez
RICARDO Alarcón, president of the Cuban Parliament, stated today (May 25) that the U.S. government presented its brief in opposition to the Supreme Court reviewing the case of the five Cuban anti-terrorists incarcerated in that country last weekend.
He added that the Five’s defense team has 10 days to make its response in early June, followed – in line with procedure – by a meeting of the Supreme Court judges to decide whether the case will be heard or not.
Alarcón explained that if the decision is affirmative, that highest legal instance must reach a verdict, within the current year, while noting that the summer recess period must be taken into account.
The Cuban leader reiterated his admiration for the capacity for resistance demonstrated by the five Cubans unjustly incarcerated in the United States, particularly in relation to Gerardo Hernández, sentenced to double life plus 15 years’ imprisonment.
He confirmed that the maximum security jail in which Hernández is serving his sentence recently imposed a lockdown on all the prisoners, including the Cuban anti-terrorist, which has happened on various occasions in the 10 years-plus that he has been incarcerated.
The president of the National Assembly of People’s Power was addressing cultural figures and ambassadors from Arab nations and Russia invited to the 15th Poetry Festival sponsored by the Cuban Union of Writers and Artists (UNEAC), among them Marcelino dos Santos, the Mozambican poet and great friend of Cuba.
Alarcón was speaking at the monthly UNEAC event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution, during which he spoke of the significance for his life of the January 1st triumph, recalled the student struggle, the teaching of Raúl Roa, and the period in which he himself worked in New York as a diplomat.
"My work at that time was arguing, speaking for and defending the principles of the Cuban Revolution," he affirmed, after revealing that he always wished to write and has done so, while still not considering himself a writer.
He paid tribute to the combatant Gerardo Abreu (Fontán), an outstanding artist whose vocation was cut short when he was killed by the Fulgencia Batista dictatorship in 1958, and from whom he learned so much about history, culture and revolution.

The Rich World Sacks, Cuba OffersBy Freddy Perez Perez
It could be contradictory and unbelievable to the pessimists that, while in the rich world millions of people are being dismissed from their jobs as a result of the global crisis, Cuba is able to offer employment to those who want work and be useful.
Our social project is characterized by justice and equity, not leaving anyone to their own fate.
That is the picture so common these days in this globalized world. While here in Cuba if a factory closes temporarily, the employees are protected with 60 percent of their salary. And the state also looks for new alternatives of available positions for men and women in other branches in which they can work.
Las Tunas is an example of that, because it is the province with the lowest rate of unemployment in the country, below one percent. While in the world the figures of unemployed rise around the clock.
In 2008 the territory established a record regarding the security of occupancy with over 27,000 positions created in different sectors. 2009 is continuing the same; nevertheless, there is a potential of a considerable numbers of people who do not contribute to society, even when they consume in equal conditions. We are trying to incorporate these resources for food production or other alternatives faced with the current situation.
Up to the middle of May 9,189 new workers had been placed in different sources.
But this does not only mean "bringing into the fold" the unemployed, but also the active workers contribute in a certain unit of time the amount of wealth or services rendered, in accordance with the salary received. Otherwise there is a financial deficit (cost)-a frequent occurrence without material support and fewer resources to distribute under our socialist formula.
If there is insufficient production of food, exports, import substitution to satisfy the needs of the family shopping basket, the social consumption etc., how can we pay for the domestic electrical equipment available to everyone, the energy, health, education, sport, culture; since their sources are derived from work, the ultimate creator of material and spiritual social welfare.
The only valid answer, above all the criteria and opinions at the present time, the only solution is MUCH WORK.
