Amnesty Calls On Obama To Lift Cuba Embargo

- Reuters - U.S. President-elect Barack Obama should lift the 46-year-old trade embargo against Cuba, the head of human rights group Amnesty International said on Friday.Obama has said he would grant Cuban Americans unrestricted rights to visit Cuba and send cash to their families there, and is open to talks with President Raul Castro, but that he would keep the trade embargo as a way of pressuring Cuba to make democratic changes.Irene Khan, Amnesty International's secretary general, said changing Washington's Cuba policy would help Obama restore the United States' moral authority, which she said was damaged during the administration of President George W. Bush."We would like President-elect Obama to lift the embargo against Cuba because we believe that that embargo is contributing to denial of human rights to the people, and is not therefore conducive to human rights change," she told Reuters during a visit to Chile.Khan also repeated calls for Obama to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba where hundreds of suspected members of al Qaeda, the Taliban and other radical Islamist groups have been held without trial in the last seven years."Obama should close Guantanamo. Obama should make a public statement confirming the prohibition of torture and ill-treatment," she said.

Cuba: Hurricane Paloma Reaches Category 2
HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 7 (acn) The Weather Forecast Center of the Cuban Meteorological Institute, in its 6 PM release this Friday, announced that Hurricane Paloma has intensified, reaching Category 2 in the Saffir- Simpson scale of a maximum five. Cuban Meteorology Institute The note commands the Cuban population to follow attentively the evolution and future path of this dangerous hurricane that represents a potential threat to central and eastern Cuban provinces. Paloma’s center was located at 6 PM in the 18.9 North, 81.2 west, 50 kilometers south-southeast of Cayman Islands and some 350 west of Montego Bay, Jamaica. Paloma has intensified and has 165 kilometers per hour maximum sustained winds, with stronger guts. Its central pressure has dropped to 967 hectpascal and it is moving north-northeast at 9 kilometers an hour. The forecast is that Hurricane Paloma will strengthen more, probably reaching category 3, turning more to the northeast and increasing speed.

Cuba Issues Hurricane Watch for Central, Eastern Provinces
HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 7 (acn) The Cuban National Defense Council issued a hurricane watch on Friday morning for the central and eastern provinces, as category 1 hurricane Paloma approaches the Cayman Islands.The local governments of Sancti Spirítus, Ciego de Ávila, Camagüey, Las Tunas, Holguin, Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo were asked to take all the necessaries measures to protect human lives and economic interests on each area. The rest of the country continues to be watchful to hurricane reports issued by the Cuban Weather Forecast Institute. At 7 a.m. EST, Paloma was about 85 miles south-southwest of Grand Cayman. The storm is expected to keep gaining momentum as it moves across the Caribbean. It could become a Category 2 hurricane later on Friday and it may reach Category 3 by Saturday.

La Habana,IPS - La inversión extranjera en el petróleo y la industria petroquímica desplazaron en 2008 al turismo en el volumen de emprendimientos del capital foráneo en Cuba, informaron fuentes del Ministerio para la Inversión Extranjera y la Colaboración Económica (MINVEC). Se estima que sólo la revitalización de la refinería de Cienfuegos, más de 230 kilómetros al este de la capital de la isla, requirió unos 5.000 millones de dólares, en un proyecto conjunto con Venezuela.

– Foreign investment in oil and the petrochemical industry displaced tourism in 2008 in terms of the number of foreign capital undertakings in Cuba, according to sources from the Ministry for Foreign Investment and Economic Collaboration (MINVEC). It is estimated that just the revitalization of the oil refinery in Cienfuegos, more than 230 kilometres east of the Cuban capital, required some five billion dollars. This is a joint project with Venezuela.

More than 350 million dollars’ worth of contracts were signed yesterday during the 26th International Havana Trade Fair (FIHAV), Cuba’s state-run press reported today. Companies from 56 countries are participating in the fair, which will conclude next Saturday.
